Rheumatology is a rapidly evolving medical specialty and it’s not just about joints and arthritis (inflammation of the joints). It includes a wide spectrum of disorders ranging from simple soft tissue problems such as trigger fingers, ganglion and tendinopathies to complex multi system disorders and major organ / life threatening conditions including Immune Mediated Inflammatory Disease (IMID) or auto immune diseases, Connective Tissue Disease (CTD) and systemic vasculitis.
Metabolic bone diseases such as osteoporosis, Paget’s disease, vitamin D deficiency (rickets, osteomalacia) and heritable collagen disorders such as Marfan’s syndrome, Ehlers Danlos syndrome and Benign Joint Hypermobility Syndrome (BJHS) also come under rheumatology. The advent of new treatments including anti-TNF drugs and other biologics over the last decade have revolutionized the treatment of many disabling rheumatological conditions including arthritis and vasculitis, resulting in better outcomes.
